How does laser welding actually work?

The heart of laser welding is a concentrated beam of light (usually a fiber laser) that focuses a huge energy density on a very small area. This energy melts the metal almost instantly. This is due to heat affected zone (HAZ) minimal – the heat cannot spread into the depth of the part or deform it.

Important technical advantages:

  • Wobble technology: Modern handheld lasers use a “oscillating” beam that moves rapidly back and forth. This allows for filling wider cracks and creating stronger seams even with less precise preparation.

  • Wire feed: Unlike older lasers, today's devices have an automatic wire feeder, which means that lasers can successfully weld large parts and fill joints similar to conventional welding.

  • Choice of materials: Lasers can be used to weld metals that are difficult to weld with conventional methods – such as aluminum, copper, or various alloys – while preventing the formation of cracks.
